CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) had four hits on the day, including a game-winning, two-run double in Game 2, to lead the Caldwell College softball team to a sweep of Felician College Friday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victories give the Cougars a 14-5 overall record and a 4-0 mark in league play.
With Caldwell trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Gaspich hit a two-out double to right-centerfield to bring home junior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and freshman Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) for a 3-2 lead. Felician (2-22, 0-6 CACC) loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but freshman pitcher Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) induced a groundout to end the game.
Almasy allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. Gaspich went 3-for-3 in the second game to raise her batting average to a team-best .456. Cascone also had a double in the win.
In the first game, the Cougars scored single runs in the first two innings without recording a hit to lead 2-1. In the third inning, Gaspich tripled to right field, scoring Fryday for a 3-1 advantage. After the Golden Falcons scored a run in the top of the fourth, sophomore Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) drove in a run and Cascone stole home to put the Cougars ahead, 5-2. Freshman Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, then junior Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) hit a two-run single as part of a three-run sixth inning for a 9-2 lead. Junior Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills) also had an RBI in the sixth.
Junior pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance for Caldwell, giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits while fanning four and walking none to improve to 7-2.
