KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Caldwell College softball team closed out the Rebel Spring Games with a 3-0 loss to Adelphi University and a 4-2 victory over Edinboro University Wednesday afternoon at Oren Brown Park. The Cougars head north after posting a 7-2 record in Florida.
In the day's first game, Adelphi (6-3-1) scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Caldwell had seven runners in scoring position for the game, but was unable to get the key hit off Adelphi starter Devon Kelly, who allowed five hits and no runs in seven innings. Junior Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) suffered her first loss of the season, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out six in six innings. Freshman Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) led the offense with two hits.
Against Edinboro (5-3), the Cougars gave up a run in the top of the first inning before scoring their first runs of the day in the bottom of the first. Freshman Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) doubled home junior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner), then scored on a single by senior Marisa Tamez (Fountain Hills, CA/Fountain Hills) for a 2-1 lead. Caldwell put together a two-out rally in the third inning, as sophomore Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) singled home Tamez and later scored on a single by freshman Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) for a 4-1 advantage.
The Fighting Scots scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 4-2 Caldwell. But freshman pitcher Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) retired the side in order in the seventh to improve to 2-1. Almasy surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits in seven innings for the win.
Caldwell begins its home schedule on Saturday, Mar. 17 with a non-conference doubleheader against Le Moyne College. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
