Slow Start Dooms Cougars at NYIT in Women's Basketball

Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost a non-conference game at NYIT, 84-56 Monday night at Recreation Hall. The result drops the Cougars to 1-2 on the season, while the Bears open the 2012-13 campaign at 1-0.

NYIT took advantage of a slow start by Caldwell in building a 19-2 lead over the first six minutes of the game. The Cougars missed seven of their first eight field goal attempts while committing six turnovers during that stretch. The lead grew to as many as 28 points before the Bears took a 51-24 advantage into halftime. NYIT shot 46.2 percent from the field and turned 15 Caldwell turnovers into 15 points in the first half.

Momentum stayed with the hosts into the second half, as the Cougars were unable to cut into the Bears' significant lead. Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) led all scorers with 20 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount -Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) hit 2-of-4 from three-point range en route to 10 points and three assists, and junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) grabbed eight rebounds. NYIT was led by Rebecca Lynch with 17 points and Nikki Jo Rotolo with 15 points, 13 boards, eight assists and four steals.

Caldwell plays in the Assumption Tournament this weekend in Worcester, Mass., taking on the host Greyhounds on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before facing Stonehill on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
