BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to No. 24 C.W. Post, 4-0 and 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the C.W. Post Softball Complex. The results end the regular season for the Cougars with a 27-21 record, while the Pioneers improve to 36-12.
In the first game, C.W. Post pitcher Christina Berardi shut out Caldwell on six hits while allowing only one base runner to advance past first base. The Pioneers scored three times in the third inning and once in the fourth, with Kristen Morcone driving in two runs. Freshman Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) led Caldwell with two hits. Senior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) pitched four innings, allowing five hits and three runs to take the loss.
The Cougar offense remained cold early in Game 2, managing only a double by junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) over the first four innings. The Pioneers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning, then pushed five runs across in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-0. Caldwell finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, when sophomore Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) doubled home sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner).
Velardi, pictured, hit a double in Game 2 and finished the day with three hits. Sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) pitched four innings and gave up nine hits and six runs to absorb the loss. C.W. Post's Sarah Kiser struck out 10 while allowing three hits in seven innings.
The Cougars await to learn where they will finish in the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, which will be completed by May 3. Caldwell currently sits in fourth place. The CACC Tournament begins on Thursday, May 5 at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J.
