CALDWELL EARNS SOFTBALL SWEEP OF NYACK

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team beat Nyack College twice in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 5-0 and 2-1 in eight innings Friday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The wins extend the Cougars' winning streak to eight and even their overall record at 13-13, including a 5-3 mark in the conference. The Warriors drop to 5-22, 3-7 CACC.

Caldwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1 on a two-run double from junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), pictured. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars loaded the bases on a walk, an error and catcher's interference before sophomore Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills) drew a walk to bring home sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) for a 3-0 lead. Then in the sixth, Caldwell scored two more runs on a Margiotta grounder and a single by freshman Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) for a 5-0 advantage.

Senior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) recorded her first shutout of the season, blanking the Warriors on five hits while striking out five and walking none to improve to 8-3.

Offense was at a premium in the second game, with neither team scoring until the top of the fourth. A run-scoring double by Kathleen McClain put the Warriors ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth, a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) allowed sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) to score and tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. With one out, junior Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) reached on an error and stole second. Cascone followed with a hard-hit single to left field that was bobbled by the outfielder, allowing Ryan to come home with the game-winning run. In a 4-3 win over Pace University on Thursday, Cascone singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) allowed just one run on nine hits while fanning six batters in eight innings to improve to 4-7. Kia Jelley also pitched well for Nyack, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one.

The Cougars play another CACC doubleheader at home on Sunday, Apr. 10 against Georgian Court University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
