CALDWELL CLOSES CACC SOFTBALL SCHEDULE WITH SWEEP OF CHESTNUT HILL

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games against Chestnut Hill College, winning 6-3 and 9-1 in six innings Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victories marked the end of the CACC schedule for the Cougars, who are 27-19 overall and 17-9 in league play. The Griffins fall to 4-30, 1-21 CACC with the losses.

Chestnut Hill got on the scoreboard first in Game 1, as Giana Cavallo hit a solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Caldwell answered with a two-run triple by freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) in the bottom of the first. After the Griffins scored a run in the top of the second to tie the score at 2-2, Caldwell regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and freshman Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) executed a double-steal that allowed Velardi to score, then junior Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) doubled to plate Margiotta. The Griffins scored a single run in the top of the third, only to have Velardi bring home Lucena with a grounder in the bottom of the third for a 5-3 Caldwell lead. The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by junior Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) for a 6-3 advantage.

Senior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) improved to 16-6 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Junior Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) pitched two perfect innings to earn the save. Lucena (right), Tamez and sophomore Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) each had two hits for Caldwell in the win.

In the second game, the Cougars took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan singled home sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) doubled in Ryan before scoring on an error later in the inning. Following a Chestnut Hill run in the top of the second, senior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) drove home Velardi with a double in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-1 Caldwell. In the bottom of the third, Velardi and sophomore Katie Dellaratta (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) both had RBIs to put the Cougars on top 6-1.Caldwell ended the game with a two-run double by Ryan in the fifth and a run-scoring single by Dellaratta (left) in the sixth for a 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) gave up an unearned run on only two hits in four innings to improve to 10-10. Juliette Wilson finished off the second game as well with two scoreless innings. Ryan sparked the offense with three hits, three RBI and a run scored.

The wins also marked the final home games for seniors Garofolo and Pulido, who have helped the Cougars win 141 games in their four years at Caldwell.

Caldwell wraps up the 2011 regular season with a doubleheader at No. 24 C.W. Post, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
