WATERBURY, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team earned a split with Post University, losing the first game 6-3 before winning the second game by the same score in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The results give the Cougars a record of 23-17 on the season, including a 13-7 mark in the conference. The Eagles are now 21-20, 13-9 CACC.
Caldwell grabbed an early lead in Game 1, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) singled home sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner), then freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. Post answered in the bottom of the second with five runs on five hits and two errors to lead 5-3. Another run in the bottom of the sixth made the score 6-3 Post. The Cougars managed just three hits after the first inning and five hits for the game.
Senior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) went the distance, allowing 10 hits and six runs, three earned, in six innings to fall to 13-5. Johanna Rice pitched six innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Post.
In the second game, Caldwell scored early again. Lucena and junior Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) each hit RBI singles in the top of the first inning to put the Cougars ahead 2-0. In the second inning, Schymanski, left, singled home junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) for a 3-0 lead. After Post scored a run in the bottom of the second, Lucena scored on a grounder by senior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) to make the score 4-1 Caldwell. The Cougars scored two more runs in the fourth on wild pitches to extend the lead to 6-1. The Eagles added two runs in the sixth but would see their comeback fall short.
Sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony), right, pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits to improve to 9-9 on the season. Schymanski ended up with four hits on the day, while Cascone scored three runs in the two games. Rice started for Post and lasted 1 1/3 innings to absorb the loss.
Caldwell plays a CACC doubleheader at Concordia College on Wednesday, Apr. 27, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
