CALDWELL BLANKS HOLY FAMILY IN CACC SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER


CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team totaled 19 runs on 25 hits in a pair of five-inning victories over Holy Family University, 8-0 and 11-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The results give the Cougars a 22-16 record overall, including a 12-6 mark in league play, while the Tigers drop to 7-24, 4-11 CACC.

Caldwell opened the first game with three runs in the top of the first inning, with senior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford), junior Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hitting run-scoring singles. Then in the third, junior Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) capped off a five-run inning with a two-run single that put the Cougars on top 8-0. Garofolo and junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) also drove in runs. Senior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) did the rest, blanking Holy Family on three hits while striking out two and walking one in five innings. The performance marked her second shutout of the season and improved her record to 13-4.

In the second game, the Cougars scored six runs in the first inning, four in the second and one more in the fourth while giving up just one hit in an 11-0 win. Sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) hit a two-run home run in the first inning and sophomore Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) had a two-run double in the second inning. Leal was 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the second game, while Ryan, pictured, had three hits in Game 2 to finish the day 6-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs.

Sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) pitched four perfect innings with one strikeout to improve to 8-9, while junior Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Caldwell faces Post University on Tuesday, Apr. 26 in another CACC doubleheader. The games start at 3:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
