COUGAR BASEBALL SWEEPS CACC DOUBLEHEADER WITH NYACK

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team recorded 30 hits on the day to sweep Nyack College, 12-3 and 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The victories give the Cougars a 10-12 record on the season, including a 5-3 mark in league play, while the Warriors fall to 0-19, 0-8 CACC.

Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a two-run home run by freshman Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph), his second homer of the season. A sacrifice fly from freshman Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) in the third made it 3-0 Cougars. Then in the fourth, Caldwell took advantage of three walks in the inning and scored five runs for an 8-0 lead. Freshman Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a two-run single, sophomore Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) belted a two-run double and freshman Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardoza) also had a run-scoring double in the inning. Nyitray, junior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) and senior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) each drove in runs in a three-run sixth inning for an 11-0 advantage. O'Donnell made it 12-0 with a run-scoring single in the eighth. The Warriors broke up the shutout with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Junior right-hander Craig Gourley (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) pitched seven innings and allowed no runs on two hits while striking out nine and walking two. Lopez, left, went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, while Ynoa was 3-for-3. The Cougars pounded out 20 hits while drawing seven walks in the win.

The second game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. Sophomore Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) led off with a double, then scored on a single by Ynoa. Freshman Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) later singled home Ynoa for a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, the Warriors loaded the bases and scored a run on a groundout to make the score 2-1 Caldwell. With the bases still loaded, Jan-Pierre Crespo hit a hard grounder to the right side. Lopez dove to his right to snare the ball, then threw to freshman pitcher Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) to end the inning. Bennetti then retired the side in the bottom of the ninth for his first collegiate save.

Junior A.J. Boardman (Sunnyside, NY/St. Francis Prep), right, started and allowed no runs on two hits while fanning nine and walking four to improve to 1-0 on the season. Sophomore Mark Sarrao (Riverdale, NJ/Pompton Lakes) tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) had three hits to pace the Cougar bats. Nyack's Wayne Richardson pitched a complete game and struck out seven while giving up 10 hits and two runs.

Caldwell hosts St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference game on Sunday, Apr. 3, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
