CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior outfielder Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Caldwell College baseball team a 2-1 victory over Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Monday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The extra-inning win allows the Cougars to split the season series with the Eagles and improve to 14-15 overall and 9-5 in league play. Post, which won the first game with Caldwell on Apr. 6, is now 15-9, 5-3 CACC.
With the score deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the 14th inning, freshman Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) lined a single down the leftfield line. Junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) sacrificed Nyitray to second with a bunt, putting a runner in scoring position with one out. Ynoa, who had singled and doubled earlier in the game, came through with a hit to right-centerfield. Nyitray wheeled around third and scored the game-winning run, giving the Cougars an important conference victory.
The dramatic ending overshadowed an outstanding pitcher's dual between Caldwell junior Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and Post's Dan Steers. The two right-handers blanked both lineups through seven innings, allowing three hits apiece. After Cook struck out the side in the top of the eighth, sophomore Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) and freshman Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) hit back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) followed with a single down the right-field line, scoring Morena with the game's first run. Steers struck out the next two batters end the threat and keep it a 1-0 game.
In the top of the ninth, Post had a runner on second and two out with Aaron Lerma batting. Down to his final strike, Lerma laced a double into right-centerfield, plating Todd Blair with the game-tying run. Sophomore Mark Sarrao (Riverdale, NY/Pompton Lakes) and freshman Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) relieved Cook after nine innings and kept the Eagles off the scoreboard until Ynoa's heroics in the 14th.
Cook, who struck out a career-high 15 batters in the first meeting with Post on Apr. 6, fanned 10 batters in nine innings while giving up one run on five hits and four walks. Bennetti earned the win, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out six to improve to 3-0. Steers lasted 10 innings and struck out 12 without a walk. Hayden Allred pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for Post and took the loss.
Caldwell takes on Southern Connecticut State, ranked fifth nationally in Division II, on Tuesday, Apr. 12 at the Kiwanis Oval. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
