CALDWELL BASEBALL OPENS SEASON AGAINST UMASS-LOWELL


FLEMINGTON, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team opened up the 2011 season with a pair of losses to UMass-Lowell, 8-0 and 11-0 Saturday afternoon at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. The Cougars were 15-20 a year ago, while the River Hawks (4-1) went 27-19 in 2010.

In the first game, the River Hawks scored three times in both the fourth and sixth innings while totaling 13 hits in an 8-0 win. Dustin Ramey allowed two hits and struck out eight in seven innings for UMass-Lowell, with Mark Sanborn driving in four runs on four hits. Junior outfielder Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) and freshman outfielder Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) had the hits for Caldwell. Junior right-hander Matt Cook (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) fanned nine batters while giving up seven hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

The second game was close until the River Hawks tallied seven runs in the final three innings for an 11-0 victory. Junior righty Craig Gourley (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) started for Caldwell and gave up four runs, two earned, on three hits in six innings. Jack Leathersich limited the Cougars to three hits in seven innings. Doerrer (pictured), junior outfielder Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) and senior infielder Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) had Caldwell's hits.

Caldwell was scheduled to play UMass-Lowell in a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 6, but the games have been cancelled due to the incoming rainstorm. The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 8, when they play at Adelphi University at 3:00 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
