LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Junior 2B Devon Cass (New City, N.Y..) and senior RF Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) drove in three runs each and reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, OF Izaiah Robinson (Franklin Twp., N.J.) laced four hits, but Caldwell University baseball's comeback fell short in a 12-9 loss to Georgian Court on Tuesday afternoon at ShoreTown Ballpark.
Trailing, 11-4, entering the seventh, CU (5-16, 4-12 CACC) battled back, scoring four times on Cass's bases-clearing, three-run double and ensuing RBI single by freshman catcher Sadiel Rodriguez (Pomona, N.Y.) to make it 11-8. After sophomore RHP Jovani Hallihan (Jackson, N.J.) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, the Cougars got another one back on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.).
But the Cougars couldn't get another run across in the eighth, and after the Lions 5-20, 3-12) tacked on an insurance run in their half of the frame, the Cougars put the potential tying runs on base in the ninth but couldn't push them across.
Caldwell next visits Dominican for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Pomona, N.Y.
