CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Le Moyne College, 11-10 and 11-3 Sunday afternoon in the home opener at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who had scored a total of 22 runs in their previous 12 games, improved to 4-10 on the season with the wins, while the Dolphins drop to 2-8.
Le Moyne opened the doubleheader by scoring a run in the second and five more in the third to lead 6-0. The Cougars began their comeback by scoring three runs in the fourth, including two on a single by sophomore Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park). Junior Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) singled home a run in the fifth, then Cefolo hit a solo home run in the sixth to make the score 6-5 Le Moyne. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tamez to tie the game at 6-6. Caldwell loaded the bases in the seventh but was unable to score, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, the Dolphins took a 7-6 lead on a run-scoring double by Kelcie Cashel. The Cougars tied the score in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out single by freshman Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo). Junior Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at home. Again in the 10th, Le Moyne took the lead with three runs for a 10-7 advantage. In the bottom of the 10th, Cascone, pictured, singled home Bates, and senior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) hit a run-scoring double to make the score 10-9. With the bases loaded and two out, Tamez singled home Cascone to tie the score at 10-10. Ryan followed with a single to centerfield, plating Garofolo with the game-winning run.
Senior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) pitched all 10 innings for Caldwell to improve to 3-2 on the season. Cascone had four hits, while Cefolo, Garofolo and Tamez had three hits apiece. Demetra Kermidas delivered four hits for Le Moyne.
In the second game, the Cougars answered two Le Moyne runs in the top of the first with three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). After the Dolphins tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fourth, Caldwell exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the fourth. Cascone hit a three-run double and Tamez had a two-run single in the inning. Cefolo and sophomores Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) and Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) also drove in runs in a big inning for Caldwell.
Wilson pitched all five innings for the Cougars, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one. Cascone went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the second game and finished the day with six hits. Cefolo and Garofolo each had two hits in the second game and five on the day.
The Cougars host NYIT in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 22. The first game is set to start at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
