CALDWELL SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT REBEL GAMES

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Stonehill College at the Rebel Spring Games Tuesday afternoon at the Fortune Road Complex. The win preceded a 9-1 loss at the hands of the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the day's second game, giving the Cougars a 1-7 record on the season.

Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning against Stonehill on a single by sophomore Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills) that brought home sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) for a 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks tied the score in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Kelsey Wilcox. In the top of the sixth, freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a two-run single that plated Schymanski, left, and junior Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles) for a 3-1 Caldwell lead. Senior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) blanked Stonehill the rest of the way to wrap up the win. Pulido allowed one run on six hits with one strikeout to improve to 1-2 on the season.

In the second game, Caldwell answered a Minnesota-Duluth run in the top of the third with one of their own in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) was hit by a pitch, allowing sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) to score and tie the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs then ran away with the game, scoring five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to earn the win. Caldwell recorded just three hits, by Lucena, Wilson and sophomore Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park), off Heather Stemper, who pitched all five innings for UMD.

The Cougars continue play at the Rebel Spring Games with games against Stonehill and Adelphi at the Osceola County Sports Complex on Wednesday, Mar. 16.
