LANTANA, Fla. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost to UMass-Lowell, 10-2 in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The defeat drops the Cougars to 3-6 overall and 2-3 on the Florida trip, while the River Hawks are now 9-1.
Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, as freshman Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) and juniors Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) and Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) led off the game with three straight singles. Ynoa's single brought home Nyitray for a 1-0 lead. UMass-Lowell tied the game in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring triple by James Katsiroubas, then took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth, when Doerrer led off with a single and eventually scored on an error to make the score 4-2. The River Hawks broke through in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on three hits and two errors to go ahead, 8-2. Two more runs in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-2 River Hawks.
Doerrer, pictured, led the Cougars with two hits and a run. Freshman Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) started on the mound and gave up five runs on seven hits while walking four and fanning two in 5 1/3 innings. Garrett Cole pitched eight innings for UMass-Lowell, giving up six hits while striking out nine and walking five. Matt Jacobs drove in three runs for the River Hawks.
The Cougars will play the University of New Haven on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at the Santaluces Sports Complex, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
