LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team advanced through the winner's bracket at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Thursday, defeating Post University 8-0 in five innings before blanking Concordia College 4-0 in the second round. The results give the Cougars a 42-12 record on the season.
In the game against Post, sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) hit a grounder to third with the bases loaded to plate freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) with the game's first run. Then in the second, Cascone's bases-loaded single scored senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) for a 2-0 lead. After a strikeout, Timbrook stepped up and blasted a long home run to center for a grand slam and a 6-0 advantage. In the fourth Timbrook followed a double from senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) with her second home run of the day and 10th of the season. The shot to leftfield tied her with Genovese for the Cougars' single-season record for home runs.
Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) dominated the Eagles' batters, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three for her third shutout in as many starts. The reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week, Wilson is now 17-5 on the season. Stephanie Carrillo lasted 1 2/3 innings for Post and took the loss.
In the day's second game, senior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) scattered four hits while striking out five and walking none in a complete-game shutout. With the win, Pulido (20-4) becomes only the second Caldwell pitcher to win 20 games in a season, joining former All-American Corinne Reiser, who won 27 games in 2004. Offensively, junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) hit a two-run single in the first, and Tamez and Timbrook added RBI singles in support of Pulido's pitching effort.
The second-seeded Cougars will take on top-seeded Dominican College in a winner's bracket game on Friday, May 7 at Georgian Court. Caldwell and the Chargers tied for the regular-season CACC crown with identical 23-3 records in conference play.
