WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division II East Region Softball Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon at the University of New Haven Softball Field. The defeat ends Caldwell's season at 42-16, while the Lions (39-18) will play Southern Connecticut State in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m.
Georgian Court's Jessica Comiskey led off the game with a double, then scored when a single by Rachel Ruch was misplayed in the outfield, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. Caldwell advanced runners to third in the first and third innings but were unable to get the clutch hit. Then in the fourth, senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) led off with a single, and pinch-runner Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) was sacrificed to second by sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley). Junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) came through with a double to left that plated Ashley with the tying run.
In the fifth, Caldwell put runners on second and third with nobody out following a single by senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and a throwing error off a bunt from sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.), who also stole second. But two strikeouts and a groundout kept the game tied at 1-1. Georgian Court took advantage of the Cougars' missed opportunity with a one-out triple by Comiskey in the top of the sixth. Sammie Garofalo then singled home Comiskey for the go-ahead run. Again the Cougars advanced a runner to third base with two out in the bottom of the sixth, only to strand the runner with a strikeout. A pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom of the seventh ended the game and extended Caldwell's losing streak to a season-high four games. Entering the postseason, the Cougars hadn't lost more than two consecutive contests this year.
Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's), pictured, pitched a strong game, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out three and walking none in a complete-game effort. The Lions' Diana Sansevera held Caldwell to one run on six hits and struck out seven for the win.
The defeat ends the collegiate careers of seniors Frantellizzi, Timbrook and Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). The trio played in three NCAA Region tournaments while at Caldwell and won the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title.
