CALDWELL, N.J. - A two-run home run by senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) in the fifth inning of Game 2 allowed the Caldwell College softball team to sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Concordia College Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Timbrook's blast game the Cougars (18-8, 8-2 CACC) a 2-1 win in the second game after Caldwell won Game 1 by the score of 1-0. The Clippers fall to 8-11 overall, 5-5 CACC.
The first game was a pitcher's dual between Caldwell junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and Alexa Rosella of Concordia, with the game's only run coming in the fifth inning. After senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) hit back-to-back singles, freshman Dia Cascone (Statel Island, NY/Susan Wagner) hit a single to left field. Sophomore Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.), who was pinch-running for Frantellizzi, came around to score from second base for a 1-0 lead.
Pulido (10-1) gave up four hits and no walks while striking out two in seven innings for her fifth shutout of the season. Ryan finished with two hits in the win. Rosella also went the distance, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.
In Game 2, Jaime Lorenzo put Concordia ahead with a lead-off home run in the top of the fourth inning. Cascone led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, eventually advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and a wild pitch. Timbrook, who is batting a team-best .475 on the season, stepped up and hit a deep home run to centerfield to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. It was Timbrook's fifth homer of the season. Freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) retired nine of the final 10 batters to give the Cougars their fourth win in a row.
Wilson pitched her second straight complete-game victory, surrendering one run on four hits while fanning six in seven innings to improve to 7-4. Freshman Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) recorded a single and a double to pace the Caldwell bats. Concordia's Theresa Magnani pitched one inning of relief and took the loss.
The Cougars play a CACC doubleheader at Nyack College on Thursday, Apr. 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Nyack, N.Y.
