FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) recorded the 200th hit of her career in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Queens College Thursday afternoon at Campus Field. Timbrook helped the Cougars win both games, 5-4 and 14-3 in five innings to improve to 38-12 and match the program's record for most regular-season victories.
Queens (16-28) took an early lead in Game 1 on a two-run home run by Caroline Carbone in the first inning. Caldwell didn't answer until the top of the fourth, when junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) hit a two-run single and later scored on a grounder by sophomore Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington) for a 3-2 lead. Freshman Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino HIlls) drove in a run in a two-run fifth inning that made the score 5-2 Caldwell. Queens scored a run in the sixth on a single by Carla Pennolino, then Faith Tessmer made it 5-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. With runners at first and second and one out, Carbone hit a grounder to shortstop Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner), who stepped on second for one out but failed to turn the double play. On the throw, the runner from second attempted to score but was thrown out at home by Timbrook to end the game.
Junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) improved to 18-4 on the year after giving up 10 hits and four runs while striking out five in seven innings. Sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Garofolo had two hits in the win.
After going hitless in the first game, Timbrook hit a RBI single in the first inning as the Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Parker had a two-run single in the inning. Queens scored a run in the bottom of the first on a single by Carbone to make the score 4-1 Caldwell. Cascone doubled home sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) and later scored on a wild pitch in a two-run second inning. Then in the third, Timbrook hit a bases-loaded single to score Margiotta for her 200th career hit. She becomes the sixth player in the program's history, and the second this season, to reach the 200-hit milestone. Senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) achieved the feat on Apr. 14.
Timbrook's hit sparked a four-run third inning that put Caldwell ahead 10-1. Garofolo, Tamez and freshman Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) also drove in runs in the third. Things continued to go the Cougars' way, as they scored four runs in the fourth inning for a 14-1 lead. Timbrook had her third RBI single of the game, while Tamez hit a two-run single and Garofolo singled home Ryan. Tamez went 3-for-3 with three RBI in Game 2 and finished the day with six hits in seven at-bats. Ryan was a perfect 4-for-4 and scored four times. and Cascone scored three runs while driving in two runs on two hits.
Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) pitched four innings and allowed one run on five hits while fanning three to improve to 15-5.
Caldwell completes the regular season on Saturday, May 1 with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Philadelphia University. The games, which start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field, mark the final home games for seniors Timbrook, Genovese and Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley).
