CALDWELL SOFTBALL SWEEPS BLOOMFIELD

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of games against Bloomfield College, 6-2 and 8-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victories are the Cougars' seventh and eighth in a row and improve their record to 33-11 overall, including a 19-3 mark in league play. The Lady Deacons drop to 15-23, 10-14 CACC.

Bloomfield got off to a fast start in Game 1, hitting three consecutive doubles in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the second with three runs on one hit and three Bloomfield errors. Junior Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) hit a run-scoring single and later scored on an error, while senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) had a sacrifice fly in the inning. Then in the third, senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) doubled home freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and later scored on a double steal for a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) hit a double that scored Forte in the fourth to make the score 6-2 Caldwell. Forte, left, and senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) each had a pair of hits in the win.

Junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) improved to 17-3 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. Brianne Moore also went the distance and took the loss for Bloomfield.

In the second game it was Caldwell who scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single by freshman Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts). Junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) led off the second with a double and came home on a Margiotta single for a 3-0 lead. Moore doubled and later scored on a grounder in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. In the fifth the Cougars made it 6-1 with three runs on four hits and an error, as Timbrook and Garofolo drove in runs. Then in the sixth, freshman Katie Dellaratta (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), right, hit her first career home run, a deep, two-run shot to left field, for an 8-1 advantage.

Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) held Bloomfield to one run on eight hits while striking out six and walking one in seven innings to improve to 13-5. Moore started and took the loss after giving up six runs, three earned, on nine hits in five innings of work.

The Cougars play at Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Apr. 24 in a CACC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
