CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team began its 2010 home schedule with a key regional doubleheader with Le Moyne College on Sunday, winning the first game 1-0 before falling 4-1 in the second game. The results give the Cougars a 9-5 record overall, while the Dolphins, who won the 2009 East Region title, are now 2-8.

The first game was a pitching dual between Caldwell junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and Katelyn Fowler of Le Moyne, who kept the scoreboard quiet through five innings. After Pulido retired the side in the top of the sixth while surrendering an infield hit, freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double off the fence in left centerfield. Senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) bunted Cascone to third, then senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly to right. Le Moyne advanced a runner to third with one out in the seventh, but Pulido induced a lineout and groundout to end the game.

Pulido (4-0) scattered four hits in seven innings while walking two and fanning two for her second shutout of the season. Fowler gave up five hits in six innings while striking out four for Le Moyne. Cascone finished with two of Caldwell's five hits, while Kimberlee Baker delivered two hits for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne took advantage of Caldwell errors in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs. In the bottom of the third, freshman Kelly Schmanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) singled and later came home on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1 Le Moyne. The Dolphins extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth, when Leah Ford tripled home Meghan Hart, then scored on a single by Danielle Van Gorder.

Brenna Klein allowed one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Fowler pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Caldwell freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance and gave up 12 hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out three and walking none.

The Cougars host another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 23, when NYIT visits Caldwell Field. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
