PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team wrapped up its home schedule for the 2009 season with a 5-2 loss to Chestnut Hill College on Friday at Smith Field. The loss drops the Cougars to 16-23 overall and 10-15 in conference play, while the Griffins improve to 18-23, 13-12 CACC.
Caldwell took the lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City), pictured, led off with a double and later scored on a single by senior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC). Chestnut Hill tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by George Kochu, then took the lead with a two-run blast by Carlo Petrillo in the top of the sixth. A runs-scoring single from senior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties) in the bottom of the sixth made it 3-2 Chestnut Hill. But the Cougars would get no closer, as the Griffins got another two-run homer from Dan Etherton in the top of the eighth.
Robert Williams earned a complete-game victory for Chestnut Hill, allowing nine hits and two runs in nine innings. Junior Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss for Caldwell.
