COUGARS TAKE TWO FROM DEVILS IN BASEBALL

PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team defeated the University of the Sciences, 11-4 and 15-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. The wins complete a three-game sweep of the season series against the Devils for Caldwell, which improves to 14-18 overall and 8-11 in league play. USP falls to 3-34, 2-18 CACC.

The Cougars got things started in Game 1 with four runs in the bottom of the first on run-scoring doubles from juniors Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC), and a two-run home run by freshman Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). After USP scored twice in the top of the third, Saxon plated Keelan with a single in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 lead. Three runs in the fourth and three more in the eighth for Caldwell put the game out of reach. Keelan, pictured, belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, while senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) hit a two-run blast in the eighth. Keelan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and four RBI. Saxon had three hits, while Doerrer and junior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) recorded two hits apiece.

Freshman right-hander Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking one in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 2-3. Pete McCauley took the loss for the Devils.

In the second game, Caldwell scored at least one run in each inning while recording 15 hits to earn the series sweep. Keelan paced the Cougar bats again with three hits and four RBI, while Saxon went 2-for-4 with three RBI. The performance marked the third straight game that Keelan had four RBI in a game. Junior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), who hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth, had two hits, as did junior Josh Stedham (North Palm Beach, FL/Jensen Beach). Senior right-hander Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) gave up two runs on seven hits while fanning six in 5 1/3 innings for his first victory of the season. It was his 17th career win as a Cougar.

Caldwell plays an important CACC doubleheader against Bloomfield College on Sunday, Apr. 26. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at Wrights Field in Bloomfield, N.J.
