PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Caldwell College baseball team scored a season-high 17 runs on 17 hits in a 17-1 victory over Philadelphia University Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. Junior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) had three doubles, a home run and six runs batted in to lead the Cougars, who are now 11-17 overall and 5-10 in the league. The Rams fall to 10-23, 7-9 CACC.
Caldwell broke open a 4-1 game with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Seniors Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties) and Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) each had two-run singles, while juniors Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) also had run-scoring singles in the inning. That was more than enough run support for junior starter Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), who allowed five hits and one run on a solo home run to Rob Fisher in seven innings of work to improve to 4-2.
Saxon, left, who also scored five runs while going 4-for-5 at the plate, hit an RBI double in the third, a lead-off double in the sixth, a two-run double in the seventh and a three-run blast over the left-field fence in the eighth. The offensive outburst helped Saxon snap a 1-for-23 slump over the previous five games. Torres also went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Irwin recorded three hits and scored twice, while Hoffstatter drove in five runs.
The Cougars host Bloomfield College on Monday, Apr. 20 in a single CACC game. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
