GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team fell to Adelphi University, 5-4 in 10 innings Thursday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field. The loss drops the Cougars to 4-8 overall on the season, while the Panthers improve to 8-5.

Caldwell took an early lead with a run in the top of the first on a single by junior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) that scored senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). Three consecutive singles by freshmen Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) and Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and junior Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), all with two outs in the fourth, resulted in another Caldwell run for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, freshman Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) led off with a double, then came home on a single by junior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC). Keelan made it 4-0 Caldwell with an RBI double in the top of the seventh. But in the bottom of the inning, the Panthers struck for four runs to tie the game at 4-4. Thomas Harper had a two-run double and also scored on a double by Corey Itts.

Caldwell threatened to score in the top of the ninth. Torres led off with a double and attempted to come home on a single by Saxon, but he was thrown out by the left fielder Harper. The Cougars then loaded the bases with two out, only to have Mike Colonna strike out the final batter and end the threat. In the bottom of the 10th, Mike Tobia followed a two-out walk by Billy Neubauer with a double that scored Neubauer with the game-winning run.

Doerrer, Torres, Saxon and Keelan each had two hits for Caldwell. Keelan started on the mound and gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings. Junior right-hander Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief and took the loss. Colonna earned the win after tossing 2 1.3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Cougars host Wilmington University on Friday, Mar. 27 at Smith Field.
