LANTANA, Fla. - The Caldwell College baseball team won both games of a non-conference doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas College by scores of 4-3 and 11-0 Sunday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The victories are the first of the season for the Cougars, who are now 2-3 on the year.
Caldwell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Game 1 on a single by freshman Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) that plated freshman Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) in the bottom of the first inning. Dan McDermott put the Spartans on top with a two-run double in the top of the fourth. After St. Thomas Aquinas pushed another run across in the top of the fifth, the Cougars answered in the bottom of the fifth. Junior catcher Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) led off the inning with a home run, then junior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) followed a Doerrer walk with a triple to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Caldwell loaded the bases on an error and two walks, setting the stage for senior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties), who drew a walk to score senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) with the winning run. Junior right-hander Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.
In the second game, the Cougars jumped all over the Spartans' pitching en route to an 11-0 win. Hoffstatter and junior Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) both homered, while junior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Ynoa and Doerrer also had two hits apiece in the win.
Freshman right-hander Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) made his collegiate pitching debut a memorable one, tossing a three-hit shutout while striking out seven and walking only one.
The Cougars continue their Florida trip with a doubleheader against UMass-Lowell on Monday, Mar. 16. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.
