KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team played two close games but lost both at the Rebel spring Games Saturday morning at the Fortune Road Complex. The Cougars fell to Le Moyne College in eight innings, 4-0, before losing to No. 10 C.W. Post, 1-0. The results mark the beginning of the season for Caldwell (0-2).
In the day's first game, both Caldwell and Le Moyne had three hits and no runs after completing seven innings. The Dolphins (9-2) broke through in the top of the eighth with four runs, including three on a bases-loaded triple by Kelly Schweikert. The Cougars could not answer in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game. Senior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson), pictured, was solid, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings. Le Moyne's Jennifer Farrelly went the distance, yielding three hits and walking four in eight innings.
Against C.W. Post (4-5), the Cougars surrendered just one run, on a single by Kristen Morcones that plated Lindsey Trotto in the bottom of the fourth. But Caldwell was unable to get a hit off Pioneers' pitcher Christina Berardi, who blanked the Cougars while walking two and striking out four in a complete-game victory. Freshman Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) was also effective for Caldwell, allowing one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Cougars continue play at the Rebel Games on Sunday, Mar. 15, with games against Southwest Minnesota State at 1:00 p.m. and Minnesota-Duluth at 5:00 p.m.
