PARSIPPANY, N.J. – A penalty kick in the 73rd minute allowed Goldey-Beacom College to defeat Caldwell College, 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field. The result drops the Cougars to 3-10-1 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while the Lightning improves to 6-10, 4-6 CACC.
With the game tied at 1-1, Matt Bik dribbled into the Caldwell penalty area and was taken down by junior goalkeeper Steve DeAngelis (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook). David Nimroozi took the ensuing penalty kick and beat DeAngelis to his right for a 2-1 Lightning lead. The Cougars pressed for the equalizer but were unsuccessful as Goldey-Beacom held on for the win, its first over Caldwell since the finals of the 2003 CACC Tournament.
The Lightning opened the scoring in the 34th minute, when Chris Steele blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 25 yards out. Less than six minutes later, junior forward Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) received a long pass down the right side from freshman midfielder Donald Kafer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown), dribbled into the penalty area and scored from 15 yards out to tie the game at 1-1. For the game, the Cougars earned seven corner kicks but were flagged for offsides 15 times.
DeAngelis made two saves in goal for Caldwell, while Ignacio Farias played the second half and recorded three saves for Goldey-Beacom. Andrew Cairns started and made one save in the first half.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Oct. 29 with a CACC game at Dominican College. The match-up is set to start at 3:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
