NORTH WALES, PA. - The Caldwell College baseball team increased its winning streak to six games after sweeping Chestnut Hill College, 3-2 and 9-5 Saturday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Hostelley Field. Senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), left, went 5-for-8 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in on the day to lead the Cougars, who are now 13-9 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Griffins, who are playing their first season of intercollegiate baseball, fall to 5-15, 3-4 CACC.
Caldwell struck first in Game 1, as freshman Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) led off the top of the third with a double, then scored on a grounder by sophomore Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) for a 1-0 lead. Chestnut Hill answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice for a 2-1 advantage. In the top of the fifth, the Cougars tied the game on a RBI double by junior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). With the game still tied after seven innings, sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) led off the top of the eighth with a single. After sophomore Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) bunted pinch runner Nick Questa (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) over to second, senior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) singled home Questa for the go-ahead run. Sophomore right-hander Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) retired the Griffins in order in the bottom of the eighth to close out the win.
Molina had three hits, while Murphy, Torres and Velazquez each had two hits to pace Caldwell's offense. Casal (4-3) pitched three innings of relief to earn the win, while Ryan Weber (3-3) went the distance and took the loss for Chestnut Hill.
Five runs in the top of the second inning of Game 2 put Caldwell in control from the start. Chiarappa led off the inning with a home run, while Irwin, Murphy and sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) also had RBIs in the inning. Murphy's solo home run in the fourth put the Cougars ahead 6-0 before Chestnut Hill scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. The Griffins answered an unearned run by Caldwell in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run by George Kochu in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 7-4. Keelan's two-run double in the top of the seventh restored the five-run lead, before the Griffins plated another run in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-5 score. Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Keelan pitched 4 2/3 innings in his first start of the season, allowing five hits and four runs to earn the victory. Freshman Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) also made his debut on the mound today, tossing 2 1/3 innings of relief. Chris Lauber (0-5) gave up eight hits and seven runs, four earned, in five innings for Chestnut Hill.
The Cougars host Post University on Sunday, Apr. 6 in a CACC doubleheader. The first game begins at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
