PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Nyack College, 5-2 Thursday afternoon at Smith Field. The Cougars, who had nine hits but left 13 runners on base, fall to 23-15 overall and 14-8 in the conference. The Warriors (11-22, 9-12 CACC) salvage the third game of the season series with Caldwell after losing twice earlier in the season. Junior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) went 3-for-3 on the day to pace the Cougars at the plate.
Nyack benefitted from three Caldwell errors and broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the fifth. Christian Amonte hit a two-run triple to spark the inning. The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a single by senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) that plated Torres. Cory Levins hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put Nyack ahead 5-1. Sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) completed the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with his eighth homer of the season to make the final score 5-2.
Junior Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Acad.) pitched eight innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out seven to drop to 3-4 on the year. Wayne Richardson (3-2) earned the win after working 6 2/3 innings of relief for Nyack.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, Apr. 25, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
