HINES PITCHES CALDWELL TO 2-1 TRIUMPH AT ADELPHI

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Junior Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) pitched all 10 innings to lead the Caldwell College baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Adelphi University in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at Bonomo Field. The Cougars, who lost to Adelphi in last year's NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, are now 7-8 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 9-11.

An unusual play led to the game-winning run in the top of the 10th. With the game tied 1-1, the Cougars put runners at first and third with two out. Sophomore Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) worked the count full, then checked his swing at ball four. Adelphi catcher Mike Connors thought Robertson struck out, and since the ball hit the ground, he chased Robertson to tag him out. With the plate unguarded, senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) raced home for the go-ahead run. Hines induced three straight groundouts in the bottom of the 10th to wrap up the win.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, when junior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) singled home sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) from third. The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Connors' bases-loaded ground ball that plated Mike Colonna. But for the majority of the game, pitching was the story. Hines scattered seven hits over his 10 innings of work, striking out six and walking two to improve to 2-0 on the season. Adelphi starter Mike Bartlett pitched seven innings and gave up four hits while fanning six. Reliever Frank Valeriano allowed two hits and a run in 2 2/3 innings and took the loss.

The Cougars play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Felician College on Saturday, Mar. 29. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. at Breslin Field in Lyndhurst, N.J.
