CARSON-NEWMAN TAKES TWO FROM CALDWELL IN BASEBALL

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Caldwell College baseball team continued play in Tennessee on Tuesday, dropping a doubleheader at Carson-Newman College, 8-1 and 4-3 at Silver Diamond Complex. The sweep leaves the Cougars at 5-6 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 24-9.

Caldwell got on the board in the top of the first of Game 1, when sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) doubled home senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) for a 1-0 lead. But Eagles tallied three runs in the second, two in the sixth and three more in the eighth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Carson-Newman pitching held the Cougar bats to just two hits after the first inning to cruise to the win. Wes McIntyre pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the win, while sophomore Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) gave up seven runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings and absorbed the loss.

The Cougars held the upper hand for most of the second game. Sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional), pictured, singled home Murphy, then scored on a double by senior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, Saxon singled, advanced to third on a groundout and flyout, then scored on a wild pitch to put the Cougars ahead 3-0. The Eagles scored runs in the third and sixth innings, including a home run by Nick Achberger in the sixth, to pull to within 3-2. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Cory McGinnis tied the game with a RBI single. Down to its last out, Carson-Newman proceeded to load the bases for Jason Gray, who singled home the game-winning run.

Murphy allowed three runs and five hits in six innings of work, while sophomore Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) pitched the seventh and took the loss. Reliever Corbin Arial held the Cougars to a hit and a walk in 1 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Caldwell plays at Tusculum College on Wednesday, Mar. 19 in Greeneville, Tenn., beginning at 4:00 p.m.
