BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team dropped a non-conference game to Dowling College, 2-1 in the final regular-season game of the season Wednesday night at Golden Lions Field. The loss sends the Cougars into next week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with an overall record of 7-10-1. The Golden Lions, who are ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA East Region rankings, improve to 10-5-3.
Dowling put the first goal on the scoreboard in the 25th minute, when Vanessa Moreira found the net for the 17th time this season to put the Golden Lions up 1-0. Thirteen minutes into the second half, freshman defender Nikki D'Orsaneo (Bowie, MD/Bowie) found senior midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) with a pass that sent Rinks in alone on Dowling goalkeeper Alicia Commisso. Rinks scored on the breakaway to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained tied until the 84th minute, when Sabrina D'Aprile took advantage of a defensive error and scored an unassisted goal for the eventual game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell), pictured, kept the Cougars in the game by making a season-high 17 saves as the Golden Lions enjoyed a 36-3 advantage in shots.
The Cougars will host a first-round game in the CACC Tournament on Monday, Nov. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
