COUGARS DRAW WITH MERCY, 1-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - A goal by freshman defender Olof Engh (Karlstad, Sweden) in the 81st minute allowed the Caldwell College men's soccer team to tie Mercy College in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at the Mercy Soccer Field. The result marked the third time in as many games that the Cougars (0-1-2) played into double overtime this season. The game was the season opener for the Mavericks (0-0-1).

The game remained scoreless until the 74th minute, when Michael Frimpong-Manso found the net for a 1-0 Mercy lead. With just under 10 minutes to play in regulation, Engh collected a loose ball off a corner kick and scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Cougars appeared to take the lead in the 85th minute, but the goal was waived off due to a hand ball. Neither team was able to score during the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made two saves for the Cougars. Carl Spence stopped three shots for Mercy. The tie follows Caldwell's 0-0 draw with 17th-ranked Bridgeport on Sept. 1 and a 2-1 double-overtime loss at St. Anselm on Sept 2.

The Cougars look for their first win of the season on Sunday, Sept. 9, when they host C.W. Post in their first home game of the year. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
