CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought non-conference match to Dowling College, 2-0 Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The defeat leaves the Cougars with a 3-7 record on the season, while the Lions, ranked 21st in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division II Poll, is now 10-2.
Dowling got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute, when Kristin Cipriano took a shot from the left side near the endline that was deflected by Caldwell freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell). The ball bounced in the air and spun into the goal for a 1-0 Dowling lead. The Cougars kept the game close with hustle and the goalkeeping of Hoenig, who finished with 10 saves. But the Lions were able to get an insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Vanessa Moreira blasted a free kick from 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal for her 13th tally of the season.
Dowling's Alicia Commiso recorded one save on the day, as the Lions held a 26-6 advantage in shots.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest against Wilmington University. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at Caravel Academy, with the men's teams to play at 7:00 p.m.
