Hopf, Levine Combine for Nine RBI, Baseball Gains Split at Holy Family, 13-2

Cougars win nightcap behind Sangataldo, 11-hit attack; Gambone goes seven strong in opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA - Senior 1B Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.) drove in five runs and freshman 3B Justin Levine (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought in four as Caldwell University scored 11 runs between the third and fifth innings to take game two of its CACC baseball doubleheader vs Holy Family at Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday afternoon, 13-2. Holy Family scored a walk-off, 3-2 victory in the opener.

Trailing, 1-0, entering the third in the nightcap, RBI by junior CF Jimmy Turchi (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Levine led to a 3-1 CU advantage. The Cougars (4-16, 3-12 CACC) broke it open in the fourth, tallying four times on a three-run triple by Hopf and RBI walk by Levine, whose two-run double an inning later capped a three-run frame for some additional insurance.

Junior righthander Vinny Sangataldo (Medford, N.J.) was brilliant on the mound, permitting six hits and walking just one in six innings of efficient work.

In the opener, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the seventh when senior LF Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.) drove in freshman 3B Justin Levine (Staten Island, N.Y.), who had doubled to lead off the frame.

Junior righthander Jonathan Gambone (Westville, N.J.), at just over 90 pitches, started the eighth but was lifted after issuing a leadoff walk. A two-run single off reliever, soph Dean Fiore (Woodbridge, Va.) gave HFU the lead and the Tigers added an insurance marker to lead, 3-1, entering the ninth.

The Cougars rallied, loading the bases, and when the HFU pitcher committed a throwing error on a grounder by junior 2B Devon Cass (New City, N.Y.), two runs scored, tying the game.

The Tigers scored the winning run on a walk-off single in their half of the ninth.

Senior SS Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) had three hits and three RBI in the nightcap, senior 2B Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) scored three runs and Turchi drove in two.
