Senior Spotlight: Cross Country/Track and Field Markiah Holmes

With the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-20 athletics schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Caldwell University Athletic Department will be highlighting its senior student-athletes and telling their stories. These young men and women have competed in their respective sports with the spring seniors losing their final season of competition. Over the coming weeks, CaldwellAthletics.com will recognize these senior student-athletes and give them the opportunity to share their stories and their future plans. Our next senior to be featured is Markiah Holmes from Cross Country/Track and Field.

What is your favorite memory/game during your playing career?
Being able to qualify with the team to go to Penn Relays, it was a great experience and was hoping to continue that tradition this spring! My relay team is what set the motivation for one another when we felt like we were not doing the best individually.

Who is the toughest opponent you played against and why?
Bloomfield and Georgian Court kept us very competitive each year for conferences.

What is your favorite motivational quote?
For inspiration from a role model, "Everyone sees the glory moments but, they do not see what happens behind the scenes" – Allyson Felix
From a coach that carried out through tradition "Coach Blues&Pritchett" say, "Fast is fast, slow is slow and in between does not matter"

Name your favorite professor/advisor/staff member and how they had a positive impact on your time at Caldwell.
Dr.Cai is my advisor but, she did not only believe in me through being her advisee, but I was also, her student and the club's president. The fact that I could come to her for anything and that she believed not only in me through those efforts but, through my internship opportunities, work ethics, volunteering and through athletics as well. This made me believe that there are people out there that care about you and how you will succeed in life.

What are your plans after graduation?
Applying to law schools and to become the lawyer I want to be with the importance of leading my community that there are possible ways to make it out

Do you have a hidden talent?
I can write well and I love to do it!
What is your ultimate vacation destination and why?
I want to visit Paris and other adventurous places as well. My goal is to travel as many places as I can.

Other reflections/thank you's/any other memories, teammates you played with, anything else you want to add?
I'm so glad I stuck it through and wish it could have been A LOT different but, I am glad I made the teammates I have had since freshman year. To the upcoming freshman and the remaining of the team, I wish you the best of luck on making this team strong! We have a great coach in place and hopefully things begin to change but, the start does not only happen within the coach! YOU GUYS HAVE TO WANT IT so fight for it and be the greatest out on the field. I will come visit.
