SPARKILL, N.Y.- Caldwell University softball freshman
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) blasted her first collegiate homerun as the Cougars split a doubleheader against Saint Thomas Aquinas College. Caldwell took the opener 5-4, while the Spartans won the nightcap 4-3.
The Cougars move to 4-10 on the season, while the Spartans stand at 3-13.
In the opener, Caldwell got on the board in the second inning as freshman
Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drew a walk. Rodriguez followed with her first homerun as a Cougar to put Caldwell in the lead 2-0.
The Cougars added three runs in the fifth inning as senior
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk. Cain singled to move pinch runner freshman
Abbigail Cleckner (Sykesville, Md.) to second. Rodriguez reached base on an error that allowed Cleckner to score and put runners on second and third. Pinch runner sophomore
Kelle Lalier (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored on a passed ball. Junior
Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) posted an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
St. Thomas Aquinas rallied with a run in the bottom of the sixth and added three in the seventh inning. Sophomore
Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) recorded the final two outs to earn her first save of the season. Sophomore
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) earned the win as she tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out three.

Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) singled and Monasseri followed with a double. Rodriguez drove in Rini for 1-0 Caldwell lead.
St. Thomas Aquinas answered with four runs in the bottom of the third as they pushed ahead 4-1. The Cougars rallied in the fourth inning as senior
Katelyn Johnson (Denville, N.J.) and freshman
Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) led off the inning with singles. Rini doubled to score Johnson. Monasseri singled to score Rini to cut the score to 4-3.
Johnston tossed a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits to fall to 2-6 on the season.
The Cougars travel to Nyack College for their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Tuesday, March 27 at 2 pm.
