Rodriguez Drives in Six Runs as Softball Sweeps Nyack in CACC Opener

ORANGETOWN, N.Y.- Caldwell University softball freshman Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drove in six runs as the Cougars swept Nyack College in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener. Caldwell took the opener 9-1 in five innings and won the nightcap 7-1.

The Cougars improve to 6-10 overall and 2-0 in the CACC, while the Warriors fall to 3-13 and 0-2 in conference play.

In the opener, Caldwell got off to a quick start with six runs in the opening inning. Senior Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) and sophomore Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led off the game with doubles. Rodriguez singled home two runs, while junior Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) blasted a two-run homerun for a 4-0 lead. Senior Katelyn Johnson (Denville, N.J.) singled and sophomore Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.) homered to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Cougars added three runs in the second inning as Rini and senior Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) walked to start the inning. Freshman Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer to push the lead to 9-0. Nyack got a run back in the fifth but the Cougars took the win.

Sophomore Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) tossed a complete game, allowing one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 3-4.

In the nightcap, the Cougars got on the board with two runs in the first inning. Silva was hit by a pitch to start the game, while Rini drew a walk. Monasseri doubled home Silva, while Rodriguez added a double to score Rini for a 2-0 lead.

Caldwell added a run in the third inning as Rodriguez blasted a solo homerun. The Cougars tacked on a run in the fourth as they loaded the bases no outs. Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Cougars pushed across three runs in the final two innings as Rodriguez posted a run scoring fielder's choice in the sixth. Johnson led off the seventh with a solo homerun, while Silva scored a run later in the inning.

Sophomore Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out four to improve to 3-6.

The Cougars travel Georgian Court University for a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, March 28 at 2:30 pm.
