CLERMONT, Fla.- The Caldwell University softball team split a pair of game on day three of their Florida trip at the National Training Center. The Cougars came up short to Wayne St. University but defeated University of Sioux Falls 3-0.
Caldwell was limited to three hits in their loss to Wayne St. Senior
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.), sophomore
Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) and freshman
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) each registered singled in the game. The Warriors got their runs in the sixth inning and held on for the win.
Sophomore
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out seven.
The Cougars found success in their final game of the day with a 3-0 win over Sioux Falls. Caldwell got their runs in the third inning as freshman
Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and senior
Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) singled. Sophomore
Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Monasseri lifted a sacrifice to score Sandoval with the first run of the game. Freshman
Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y) singled to score Silva and Rini to help Caldwell extend their lead to 3-0.
Johnston earned her first win of the season as she tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out three.
The Cougars travel to Saint Leo University on Tuesday, March 13 for a doubleheader starting at 11 am.
