Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – A two-run double in the top of the 11th inning by senior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) allowed the Caldwell College baseball team to defeat Mercy College, 9-7 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Mavericks Field. The Cougars improve to 3-15 on the season with the win, while the Mavericks drop to 9-14.
Caldwell got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the third inning on a bunt by junior
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's). Then in the fourth, junior
Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) hit a two-run single and later scored on a single by Joyce for a 4-0 lead. Mercy scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, then a double by senior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) brought home sophomore
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) to make the score 5-2.
Caldwell made it 6-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) that plated sophomore
Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun). The Cougars answered two runs by Mercy in the bottom of the seventh with a run in the top of the eighth on a single by Nunez that scored junior
Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) for a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Mercy came back to score three runs to tie the score at 7-7 and force extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Rivera drew a walk and senior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) doubled to put runners on second and third. With two out, Nyitray laced a double to right centerfield that brought home Rivera and O'Donnell for a 9-7 advantage. The Mavericks put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the 11th, but senior pitcher
Gary Gurino-Burns (N. Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) induced a fly ball to end the game.
Gurino-Burns pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Senior
Nick Karalekas (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) turned in a quailty start, allowing two run, one earned, and seven hits while striking out two in six inning of work. O'Donnell went 4-for-6 with three runs and two doubles, while Joyce finished with three hits and two RBIs. The Cougars recorded season highs in hits (19) and runs (nine) in the win.
Caldwell plays a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at the University of the Sciences on Friday, Apr. 11. The first game begins at 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
