St. Thomas Aquinas Downs Caldwell in Baseball

POMONA, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 20-7 Tuesday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The Cougars are now 4-21 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 25-12.

Trailing 4-0 after four innings, Caldwell scored twice in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from senior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and a single by junior Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) that plated O'Donnell. After the Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, junior Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) hit a three-run double in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-5 STAC. But the Spartans put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) singled home a run in the eighth, and a grounder by senior Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) allowed senior Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) to score in the ninth.

Nunez went 3-for-5 in the game, while sophomore Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had two hits.

The Cougars play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Felician College on Wednesday, Apr. 23 in Lyndhurst, N.J.
