Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and defeat Molloy College, 4-3 in a non-conference game at the Kiwanis Oval Wednesday night. The Cougars improve to 2-13 on the year, while the Lions fall to 8-11.
Molloy scored a run in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 advantage. Starting pitcher Sean Gordon kept Caldwell off the scoreboard over the first five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. The Cougars loaded the bases on a single by senior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) and walks by junior
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) and senior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). Peter Vath replaced Gordon on the mound, and senior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) roped a double into left centerfield to plate Nyitray and Joyce.
Still in the sixth and with one out, senior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) singled to score O'Donnell and move Nunez to third. Senior
Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought home Nunez for the go-ahead run. Freshman pitcher
Zach Endersby (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) retired the next six batters, including three strikeouts, and senior
Steve Valenti (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Junior
Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) earned the victory, pitching six innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. It was the first victory since March 26, 2012 for Bennetti, who has battled injuries the past three seasons. O'Donnell had a pair of hits to pace the offense.
The Cougars return to conference play on Saturday, Apr. 5 with a doubleheader at Philadelphia University beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
