Dominican Takes Two from Caldwell in Baseball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost twice to Dominican College, 4-3 and 8-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Monday at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars are now 4-18 overall and 1-11 in conference play, while the Chargers improve to 12-17, 6-6 CACC.

In the first game, Dominican scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, junior Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) doubled home freshman Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) for the Cougars' first run of the game. The score remained 2-1 until Rob Alonso hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 advantage. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the seventh, as senior Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) singled to plate senior Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) and sophomore Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) to make it a one-run game. But Caldwell was unable to generate any offense the rest of the way, as Dominican wrapped up the win.

Junior Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) allowed four runs on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings of work. Junior Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. For Dominican, Peter Martinez went the distance, giving up three runs on eight hits in nine innings to earn the win.

The second game developed into a pitcher's dual between senior Dan Bartlett (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) and Anthony Pastrana. Bartlett kept the Chargers off the scoreboard through eight innings, while Pastrana blanked the Cougars through seven innings before giving way to reliever Jesse McIlwaine. Caldwell loaded the bases in the first inning but came up empty, and Dominican threw out a runner trying to score from second on a single in the fifth. In the top of the ninth, the Chargers exploded for eight runs on three hits and three errors to end the scoreless string. McIlwaine, who earned the victory, gave up a single to Rodriguez in the ninth but closed out the win and the shutout.

Bartlett ended up allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight without a walk. Nunez delivered two hits for Caldwell.

The Cougars host Pace University on Wednesday, Apr. 16 in a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
