Cougar Baseball Splits CACC Doubleheader with USciences

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College baseball team played a doubleheader with USciences, losing the first game, 10-7 before winning Game 2, 12-7 in a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games Friday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field. The results give the Cougars a 4-16 record on the season, including a 1-9 mark in league play. The Devils are now 5-22, 3-8 CACC.

In Game 1, Caldwell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as juniors Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) and Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's), and sophomore Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) each drove in runs in the inning. Senior Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) led off the game with a triple. But USciences put seven runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, including a three-run home run by Matt Miniconzi. Then in the second, Miniconzi hit a two-run triple in a three-run inning, as the Devils took a commanding 10-3 lead.

Senior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) delivered a two-run single and came home on a single by LaTorraca in a three-run seventh inning. A triple by senior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) plated Nunez to make the score 10-7. But that's as close as the Cougars would get, as Chris Geraci had three strikeouts and a walk in the ninth to wrap up the win for the Devils.

Nyitray went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, while Nunez and Joyce each had two hits. Junior right-hander Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial) pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing five hits in relief.

Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 on a bases-loaded walk by Nyitray. After USciences scored twice in the bottom of the first, the Cougars scored twice in the top of the third, including an RBI single from Nyitray, to regain the lead, 3-2. Then in the fourth, O'Donnell and Nyitray each hit two-run doubles, and Nyitray later came home on an error to extend the lead to 8-2. The Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, only to have Caldwell push two runs across in both the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.

Senior pitcher Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) gave up seven runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Junior Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall) held USciences to just one hit in 1 1/3 innings to record the save. Nyitray went 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs, and O'Donnell was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs for Caldwell, which tallied 15 hits.

The Cougars host Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 12. The first game begins at 12:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
