CALDWELL, N.J. – Junior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) poured in a career-high 31 points as the Caldwell College women's basketball team beat top-seeded Philadelphia University, 81-52 in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday night at the George R. Newman Center. The victory advances the Cougars (18-10) to the CACC championship game for the second year in a row. The Rams fall to 20-8 with the loss.
Caldwell led for most of the game, building a 30-20 advantage following a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) at the 8:18 mark of the first half. The lead was eight points when the Cougars used a 10-1 run, including six points from Caswell, to close out the half and take a commanding 42-25 halftime lead. Caswell hit 8-of-9 from the field en route to 18 points, as Caldwell shot 60.0 percent from the floor while limiting Philadelphia to 37.5 percent in the half.
A three-pointer by senior guard
Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) pushed the lead to 20 points early in the second half. The Rams answered with a pair of threes from Monica Schacker and a basket by Bria Young to bring the Rams to within 12, 47-35 with 16:10 to play. A 15-8 run capped by a three from junior guard
Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) pushed the lead back up to 19, 62-43 with 9:30 remaining. Philadelphia was able to come within 14, 62-48 with 8:07 on the clock, but would get no closer, as the Cougars closed out the game with a 14-0 run.
Caldwell shot a season-high 60.4 percent from the field for the game compared to 39.6 percent for Philadelphia, who defeated the Cougars during the regular season, 91-80 on Feb. 1.
Caswell was 12-of-15 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the line while grabbing eight rebounds and two steals. Senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) tallied 15 points, nine boards and four blocks. Junior guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dished out nine assists, and Gold contributed seven points, three assists and three steals. Tori Arnao paced the Rams with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Cougars, who lost to Holy Family in last year's final, will face Bloomfield College on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Newman Center. The CACC Tournament champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
