Solid Pitching Leads to First Win for Cougar Baseball

Box Score
FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Queens College in a non-league game Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field. The Cougars improve to 1-5 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-2.

Caldwell scored all of its runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) led off with a single and senior Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no one out. Joyce scored the game's first run on a single by senior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph), then freshman Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) doubled down the left field line to plate Luczaj for a 2-0 lead. With Nyitray on third, a grounder from senior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) scored Nyitray to give the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.

Queens scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Nick Osburn, but that was all the Knights could muster off Cougar pitching, which held Queens to four hits. Junior right-hander Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five without a walk. Senior Dan Bartlett (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) gave up three hits and a run while fanning four in 3 2/3 innings, and junior Joseph Saverino (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) recorded the final out to earn the save.

At the plate, Caldwell registered nine hits, including two apiece from Nyitray and senior Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham).

The Cougars head to Cary, N.C., to play five games in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, starting with games against Pace University and Merrimack College on Saturday, Mar. 15.
