Caldwell Wraps Up Northeast Challenge with Loss to Molloy

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Caldwell College baseball team completed play at the Northeast Challenge on Sunday, losing to Molloy College, 12-2 at the Ripken Experience. The Cougars fall to 0-5 on the season, while the Lions are now 2-2.

Caldwell struck first in the top of the second inning, as freshman Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) tripled and later scored on a double by senior Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) for a 1-0 lead. Molloy tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third, then put eight runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-1 advantage. Senior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) singled home sophomore Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) in the top of the fifth for Caldwell's other run.

Senior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) went 3-for-5 at the plate, while O'Donnell and freshman Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) had two hits apiece. Senior pitcher Steve Valenti (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) took the loss in relief of starter Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge), who allowed two runs on three hits in three innings of work.

The Cougars return to action on Mar. 11, when they are scheduled to play a non-conference game at Queens College.
