Cougars Fall to Merrimack at Northeast Challenge, 6-4

Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost a non-conference game to Merrimack College, 6-4 Saturday evening at the Northeast Challenge. The loss gives the Cougars a 0-4 record on the season, while the Warriors are 3-0.

Merrimack got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, junior Anthony Caruso (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) singled home senior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) with the bases loaded. Caldwell was unable to capitalize after Caruso's hit, as Warriors' pitcher Tim Cashman retired the next three batters in order.

The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Caruso double that plated junior Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) to make the score 4-2. Merrimack answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh to restore its four-run lead, 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Caldwell loaded the bases with no outs and scored a run on a grounder that the Warriors turned into a double play. After Nyitray and Joyce drew walks to load the bases again, senior Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) singled to center, scoring senior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) to make the score 6-4. Caruso came up with the bases still loaded, but a strikeout ended the inning and the threat.

Joyce and Caruso each had two hits for Caldwell, which recorded eight hits compared to six for Merrimack. Senior right-hander Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief of junior starter Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial), allowing two hits and two unearned runs.

The Cougars close out play at the Northeast Challenge with a 12:30 p.m. game against Molloy College at the Ripken Experience.
