WATERBURY, Conn. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team erased a 23-point deficit to defeat North Division foe Post University on the road, 89-80 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night at the Drubner Center. The victory is the fifth in a row for the Cougars, who are now 8-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Eagles drop their fourth straight game to fall to 4-9, 4-3 CACC.
Post took control of the game early, building a double-digit lead over the first five minutes of the first half. The lead grew to 23 points, 54-31 with 2:08 remaining in the half, as the Eagles shot 66.7 percent from the field to that point and received 21 points from Aubrey Latham. Caldwell tightened the defense, forcing four turnovers while not allowing a point the rest of the half. Senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) provided the offense, scoring seven of the Cougars' 10 points over the final two minutes to make the halftime score 54-41 Post.
Momentum stayed with Caldwell into the second half, as the Cougars tallied the first 14 points to overtake the Eagles, 55-54 with 16:42 to play. Sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) had six points and Anderson added four points in the run. After the lead changed hands four times, Caldwell pushed its lead up to 67-60 with 12:44 on the clock. The improbable comeback saw the Cougars go on a 36-6 spree over nine minutes and 24 seconds in erasing a 23-point deficit and taking a seven-point advantage.
After Caldwell extended the lead to nine points, the Eagles staged a comeback of their own, tallying 10 straight points to regain the upper hand, 75-74 with 7:19 remaining. But the Cougars responded with a 15-2 run that made the score 89-77 and put the game away. Caldwell shot 50.0 percent from the field in each half while limiting Post to 30.6 percent shooting after halftime. The Cougars also drained 17-of-18 from the charity stripe in the second half compared to 2-of-3 for the Eagles to help fuel the comeback.
Anderson made 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line en route to a team-best 26 points. The reigning CACC and ECAC Player of the Week, she also added seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Angelo was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and scored a career-best 24 points to go with four steals. Junior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) each scored 13 points, with James recording 15 rebounds and four blocks. James, last week's CACC Rookie of the Week, has had at least 13 rebounds in her last five contests. Junior guard
